I'm sorry but I'm not understanding the business case behind your project. Perhaps more information about the project would help?
I've another comment awaiting moderation, which never popped up. I understand this completely, and for other clients similar things have been done, but this client is a SMALL BUSINESS, and dropping several thousand on a new server and extra labour required for migration, on top of other bigger work going on, is a non starter right this second.
An upgrade, assuming possible, is a 1 - 2 hour process on existing hardware. We have solid local backups and can easily test restore the latest to a HyperV VM before starting. I don't want to sound cheeky or get into a debate, but I'm not asking you to examine my business case.
I manage a lot of small business networks 40 plus, up to 50 staff in size , with a massive variety of infrastructures, using cloud, virtualisation, or not as the case may be. Each one is different, and without spending an hour on history, physical location, future plans, and a load of other details, please accept that in this case, I would simply like to upgrade from R2 Essentials, to Standard. I suppose in other ways I've already answered my original question already.
Assuming the local backup test restores solidly, there's no harm in giving it a go directly using even a trial license, with no outlay for the customer. If successful we buy it. So you're still wasting just as much time. And how is any better to test it out on a live system even if you have a backup?
Totally correct - have been"caught out" with this one on before with an early installation and had forgotten - you can't upgrade a trial DC I believe you can upgrade a non - AD server.
Don't really have any other options for this customer other than working on live sysem. It's going to be an out of hours, downtime work anyhow, without them having a spare server.
We have one HyperV host loan unit, but it's for exclusive use of monthly retainer clients, which this one currently isn't. And you can't make a short term exception for the migration?
Seems like an unnecessary self imposed limitation. If it wasn't available for those paying for the service, it wouldn't be very fair. We're a very busy little shop - if anything happens that is more urgent and I have to leave the migration to cover other issues, it mightn't be just a few days unavailable.
Not trying to debate, just wanted to better understand what you are up against. I figured you had good reason to do an upgrade, again just trying to understand the environment better and why you need to do what you are doing. As I stated I don't believe you have an upgrade path to standard. You do, however, have an upgrade path to essentials as I posted in the reply you commented on.
So in answer to your OP question, no. You will have to either upgrade to essentials or go to std first before going to standard. Essentials is out of the question, as in the future we will be looking at linking this site over a VPN to a second one reason for moving off Foundation.
Which is one of the routes I gave you earlier too. That's the only route I know of that you can go because again, as James even said, there's no straight shot.
So your upgrade is going to be a tiered process. Did you ever do the upgrade? How did it turn out? I have the same scenario. Small business, started out on R2 Foundations, grew quickly, several other projects going on, now need more users, more features, and purchasing a whole new server is not feasible right now.
I do have a backup server on location with VM's, but it is serving another purpose and does not have much room left on it to do a migration and then move back to original server. We have a Windows XP computer don't ask with network shares that, as of yesterday, are no longer reachable by other computers on the LAN.
Computers can ping it but cannot connect to it. Was there a Microsoft update that caused the issue? Nothing else ch Z showed me this article today and I thought it was good. I think my favorite is 5, blocking the mouse sensor - I also like the idea of adding a little picture or note, and it's short and sweet.
